Situación de Vulnerabilidad Social
The purpose of this work is to analyze the perceptions of teachers of English, who work in socially vulnerable educational contexts, regarding the relationship between children’s situation of social vulnerability and effective and meaningful learning construction. Data collection is carried out through a semi-structured interview, applied to a sample of 8 teachers who belong to the researched educational institutions. In this context, teachers show concern for students’ interests, needs and abilities, as priority requirements to facilitate access to the knowledge of the English language and improve academic performance; contributing, in this manner, to an inclusive education for social justice.

Este artículo se plantea analizar las percepciones de niñas y de niños de escuelas públicas valdivianas en contextos socialmente vulnerables, en relación con sus experiencias de aprendizaje del inglés, basadas en la ludicidad. Desde el paradigma cualitativo, la metodología de investigación contempla un estudio descriptivo de una muestra de 40 participantes entre 7 y 10 años. La discusión de los resultados evidencia que estos participantes destacan el empleo de estrategias didácticas innovadoras que activan la motivación, las emociones positivas y las relaciones interpersonales para el aprendizaje en un ambiente cómodo y seguro.

This case study explores the development of listening skills of elementary students from a Chilean public school. Results show that the great majority of students are not able to develop the skills under study due to an initial cognitive, affective, motivational and behavioral development.

This study purports to explore public school Chilean children’s affective meanings in relation to the implementation of body movement-based activities in English classrooms from Valdivia city. Research has shown that body movement has a meaningful impact on teaching learning processes. Children’s physio-psychological development is strengthened through enjoyment hormone production and wellbeing, which produces higher levels of concentration, perception, understanding and knowledge construction.

This work describes the methodological approach to communicative competence FOCAL SKILLS as proposed by Hastings (2007 [1988]) –an approach that is related to Jakobson’s communication model (1960) and to Chomsky´s theory of communicative competence (1965) – and considers its possible application within the Universidad Austral de Chile as a strategy for improving acquisition of English as a foreign language by students. This paper also examines the methodology for implementing this approach and the obstacles which the researchers have faced, along with possible solutions.
